Hytera puts communication in motion by integrating a complete solution for boosting extended coverage through a 1km long trainline tunnel for an Italian rail networks company.

Tunnels can pose a big threat for communication possibilities. This is because tunnels are often long in nature and are seen as blind spots when it comes to communication signals. The communications solution is usually complex involving at least 2 radios and frequencies. This is a big issue for rail services that often have to travel through tunnels as part of their route.

One of the main rail network infrastructure providers based in Italy had the challenge of extending radio signals through a 1km long tunnel to ensure operators could communicate with each other from the nose to the tail of the train, as well as with the ground crew personnel located outside of the tunnel. This was a unique operational challenge, that our dealer BPG RadioComunicazioni (a partner of Advantec Distribution), recommended Hytera's MD785iG full duplex mobile radio as the best fit solution. It's single frequency repeater feature mitigated the issues by successfully providing communication for trains in transit whilst in the tunnel to the outside ground crews.

Thanks to the flexible nature of Hytera's MD785i single frequency repeater and Pseudo Trunking features, continuous communications were possible inside and outside the tunnel in direct mode (without the need for a repeater) thus saving the cost of a second radio and frequency licence. This provided train personnel with reliable communications which ensured they were able to coordinate daily operations with quality, safety and security.

The system was tested successfully and received full customer satisfaction.
