• Migrating Marcus Communications - An Analogue to Digital Story

    Utilities | Brand Story

Marcus Communication (Marcus), founded by Bruce Marcus in April 1969, is the largest trunking radio network operator in Connecticut, USA. Its trunking radio communications network covers the whole state and many fields such as the police, the fire service, medical aid teams, urban engineering and taxi services. From the very start of the company, Marcus Communications has been striving for technical excellence in the field of two-way radios. Over the past 33 years, Marcus has participated in countless events where technical know-how and agility were absolutely necessary. The Marcus Communications team continues its dedication to its customers and community while making significant breakthroughs in the technology industry.

Challenges

Marcus Communications was providing radio leasing and network maintenance for business users, and a full set of communication services for public safety users. With growing demands in communication, Marcus gradually realised the inferiority of analogue Logic Trunked Radio in communication and data services.

End users often complained about the LTR network due to unclear communication quality and blind areas in communication. At the same time, some taxi services maintained a "wait-and-see" attitude because it was unable to provide a GPS service.

Public Safety users gave up completely due to the high rent of Marcus’ P25 equipment. Continuing problems meant that Marcus' business was struggling.

Hytera's solutions

Impressed with the amazing quality of Hytera’s equipment, Marcus decided to replace the existing network in stages with Hytera DMR Trunking Pro.

In the first phase, three DS-6210 trunking base stations were installed in the LTR network in Box mountain, Avon and Haddam, which covered Manchester, Hartford, Avon and Haddam. After that, a total of 20 DS6210 trunking base stations were located to cover the whole network of Connecticut.

Reduced costs, improved quality... the benefits

Compared with the previous LTR analogue network, the newly built Hytera DMR Trunking Pro brought Marcus experience of cost-saving and high-efficiency. They were looking forward to forging an ongoing successful partnership with Hytera.

  • Low Network Cost – Hytera DMR Trunking Pro provides double-user capacity and traffic capacity, from 900 to 1800, with the same equipment or even less (three base stations, each base station 4 RF units), which notably reduces the costs.
  • Superior Audio Quality – Hytera DMR Trunking terminals adopt advanced digital voice and channel coding technology, achieving better audio quality compared with the analogue system, which brings Marcus' end users an excellent communication experience.
  • High Spectrum Efficiency – DMR technology adopts TDMA two time-slot technology which divides the 12.5kHz bandwidth into two 6.5 kHz time slots to support 2 simultaneous communication channels, greatly enhancing spectrum efficiency and system capacity, which also improves battery saving.
  • Large Coverage – Hytera DMR Trunking Pro uses 3 receivers, perfectly meeting the 95% coverage demands of Marcus system network. (Public safety users: 95dBm downlink, business users: 105dBm downlink)

"We talked to one of our employees on his way home on a handheld 35 miles from us in his house as well. We are in a large indoor mall in West Hartford with excellent results! Can't wait for the unit with the phone we have named the Hyphone!"
